Description

Title: Quasar Surveys in China

Speaker: Xue-Bing Wu(Peking University)

Abstract: Quasars were discovered 60 years ago and have become important tools to study the cosmic evolution. Quasar surveys have also been done in China in the last decade. LAMOST quasar survey has discovered more than 20,000 quasars and has become one of the large quasar surveys in the world. The Galactic Plane background quasar survey has discovered more than 1,000 quasars and provided essential helps to the astrometry for Galactic objects. The luminous z> 5 quasar survey has discovered more than 100 high redshift quasars and formed important samples to study the early universe. The forthcoming CSST quasar survey will discover more than one million quasars and contribute more to the study of cosmic evolution.

Bio:

Prof. Wu obtained Master’s degree in physics from Huazhong Normal University in 1989, and PhD in astrophysics from Beijing Astronomical Observatory in 1996.  Then he worked in Institute of Theoretical Physics, Beijing Astronomical Observatory and finally, in 2000, to Peking University.

His research interests include black hole astrophysics, quasars and AGNs, high energy astrophysics and observational cosmology.

Prof. Wu obtained the 2004 New Century Talent Support Plan (Ministry of Education), the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2005, and was awarded the first Huang Runqian Fundamental Research Award for Astrophysics in 2015. In the same year, his research was selected as Ten Major Advances in Science in China, and Ten Major Advances in Science & Technology in Universities and Colleges.

In 2017, he was awarded the first prize of Natural Science (Ministry of Education).
