Description

Title: Galaxy growth from the first billion years to the present day: a JWST, ground-based and panchromatic modelling perspective

Speaker: Prof. Stijn Wuyts (University of Bath, UK)

Abstract: JWST's long-wavelength capabilities have transformed studies of the high-redshift Universe. Among recently discovered populations of objects are ultra-massive galaxies and mysterious Little Red Dots, both making an appearance within the first billion years after the Big Bang. I will highlight how their physical interpretation is rapidly evolving, and how the pace of galaxy growth itself is modulated by the environment galaxies live in. At later cosmic times, our observational datasets on distant galaxies are increasingly becoming panchromatically resolved. I will discuss insights gained from such multi-wavelength and resolved observations of galaxies since cosmic noon, and will describe novel methodologies designed to optimally constrain the internal make-up of their stellar and dust components.

 

Bio:
Prof Stijn Wuyts is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Bath.  He obtained his PhD from Leiden University on the topic of "Red Galaxies at High Redshift", worked on the interface between galaxy observations and simulations as a Keck Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and further explored the distant Universe as a Junior Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics.  At the University of Bath, he combines tracers of stars, dust, ionized and cold gas to reveal the physics governing the build-up of stars within galaxies near and far, and the evolution of their structure through cosmic time.
