Description

Title: Progress in Chinese Antarctic Astronomy
Speaker: Zhaohui Shang(商朝晖)

Abstract:
Chinese Astronomy Programs in Antarctica have been carried out for more than 10 years at Dome A, the highest place on the Antarctic Plateau.  More and more evidence has revealed that Dome A has the best observing conditions for astronomy on the ground.  This talk will review the development of the programs as well as scientific results in time-domain astronomy, and highlight the recent site testing results of superb seeing. Related information on the Antarctic research expedition will also be briefly presented.

Bio: Prof. Shang received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wyoming in 2003. He has made many achievements in several frontier fields of astrophysics. He returned to Tianjin Normal University in 2006. As the deputy director of China Antarctic astronomical center, he is responsible for important projects in the Antarctic Dome A site. Recently, Nature published a major achievement of Prof. Shang's research team, that confirms Dome A site as the best optical astronomical site in the world.
