On the morning of April 6, the inaugural meeting of the Department of Astronomy of the School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiaotong University was held at the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Xu Xuemin, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shanghai Jiaotong University, former Academician Ye Shuhua of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Academician Zhou Youyuan of the National Astronomical Observatory, Academician Cui Xiangqun of the Nanjing Astronomical Optical Technology Institute of the National Astronomical Observatory, and from the National Astronomical Observatory, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Purple Mountain Observatory, Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, Nanjing More than 60 senior astronomical experts and scholars from more than 20 brothers' colleges and research institutes such as universities, Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China, Tsinghua University, Zhongshan University, Xiamen University and Beijing Normal University attended the inaugural meeting. The conference was presided over by Professor Zhu Ka, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Xu Xuemin gave a speech at the conference. She first expressed her heartfelt congratulations on the establishment of the Department of Astronomy of the School of Physics and Astronomy. Then she combined the national strategic needs with the subject planning of Shanghai Jiaotong University to explain the necessity and timeliness of the development of astronomy in Jiaotong University. The staff reviewed the development process and outstanding achievements of the astronomy discipline of the School of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. They expressed their sincere gratitude to the senior scholars who made significant contributions to the development of the astronomy discipline of Jiaotong University, and hoped that the Department of Astronomy of the National Chiao Tung University will be facing the country. Strategic needs and astronomical innovative talent training have made an indispensable and significant contribution.
Later, in the joy of the accompanying music, Academician Ye Shuhua, Vice President Xu Xuemin, Academician Zhou Youyuan and Academician Cui Xiangqun came to power to jointly unveil the astronomy department of the School of Physics and Astronomy, and announced that the Department of Astronomy of the School of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiaotong University was formally established and astronomical. Department development is a good expectation.
After that, Academician Jing Yipeng, the first dean of the Department of Astronomy at the School of Physics and Astronomy, read a congratulatory letter from Academician Zhang Jie, the vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the former president of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Academician Zhang Jie expressed his warmest congratulations on the establishment of the Department of Astronomy. Congratulations, I highly affirmed the rapid development of the astronomy discipline of Jiaotong University in recent years. I hope that the Department of Astronomy inherits the tradition of “first-class talents” of Shanghai Jiaotong University and cultivates more “first-class” talents for the astronomical community.
Subsequently, the director of the Department of Academician Jing Yipeng introduced the development history, current strength of the astronomy discipline of Jiaotong University, and looked forward to the future development of the astronomical system. The Department of Astronomy originated from the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Its predecessor was the Department of Applied Physics. Since 2010, the astronomy and celestial talent team has developed rapidly. In 2012, the Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics was established. In 2013, the Department of Physics was renamed the Department of Physics and Astronomy. In recent years, remarkable achievements have been made in personnel training, academic research and talent team building. In the CFHT survey and construction of the simulation close to the universe, ELUCID has achieved a number of important achievements with international influence, and strong support from the school leaders. Under the auspices, the Department of Astronomy will adhere to the educational philosophy of teaching and learning, and will actively cultivate astronomical professionals who are knowledge-involved in knowledge exploration, capacity building and personality development.
During the exchange session, the guests spoke enthusiastically. Academician Ye Shuhua said, "Education is not only about cultivating high-quality talents, but also that scientific research results are at the forefront of the world. I hope that the Department of Astronomy will develop into a world leader in astronomy after ten years." Researcher Yang Lan, director of the Purple Mountain Observatory, expressed his expectation for further progress. Strengthen cooperation with the Department of Astronomy of the National Chiao Tung University in personnel training and research. Liu Fukun of Peking University, Mao Shude of Tsinghua University, Li Wei of Zhongshan University and other guests all made impromptu speeches. Professor You Junhan, the former astronomical subject of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, reviewed the history of the growth and development of the astronomy discipline of Jiaotong University and placed high hopes on the international development of the astronomy department.
Finally, Professor Wang Xiaoqun, Dean of the School of Physics and Astronomy, made a concluding speech. He thanked the colleagues in the astronomy community for their long-term help and support for the development of the astronomy discipline of Jiaotong University. I hope that in the future work, the colleagues in the domestic astronomical circles will face the country. Strategic needs, oriented to first-class talent development, closer to the internationalization of cutting-edge research, continue to make leading research results, and jointly promote the frontier development of astronomy, astrophysics and related interdisciplinary.
