On the afternoon of June 24th, 2019, the “Asymmetric Science and Technology Department of Shanghai University of Science and Technology and the Institute of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiaotong University launched the “Aperture and Long-Term Development Plan for 2021-2035 and the Development of the 14th Five-Year Plan”. The meeting was held at the New Science Building of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Executive Director of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Dong Guoxuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Astronomy, Director Liu Qiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Jingxuan, Academician Jing Yipeng of Shanghai Jiaotong University, National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Purple Mountain Observatory, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, Nanjing Astronomical Optical Technology Research Institute Nearly 30 astronomical experts from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, University of Science and Technology of China, and Beijing Normal University attended the kick-off meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting, Director Dong Guoxuan first introduced the background of the meeting, pointing out that the Fund Committee is currently organizing the National Natural Science Foundation's 2021-2035 medium and long-term development plan, the "14th Five-Year" development plan, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Natural Science Foundation "China" Research on the development strategy of disciplines and frontiers, everyone's task is to complete the "astronomical development planning and development strategy research". In order to promote the implementation of this work, the Fund Committee established an astronomical expert group and a secretarial group, members of which are astronomers from various research institutions.
Subsequently, Director Liu Qiang read out the newly formed expert group and secretarial group list. The expert group consists of 15 members. Academician Jing Yipeng is the leader of the team. The secretary group consists of 16 members. Professor Shi Yong of Nanjing University is the team leader. Liu Qiang elaborated on the specific tasks of the medium and long-term planning of astronomy in 2021-2035, including proposing a long-term priority development field in astronomy, a new round of research on the discipline layout and talent planning of astronomy, and writing medium and long-term development plans. Research reports, etc.
The participating experts held a heated discussion around the development strategy of the astronomy discipline, the talent team, and the priority development areas. On the basis of your discussion, Academician Jing Yipeng, the leader of the expert group, summarized the key points of the next phase of work, and divided the members of the expert group according to the branch discipline.
The launching symposium received positive responses from many well-known scholars in the national astronomy discipline. The successful convening of the conference laid an important foundation for the research and formulation of the National 14th Five-Year Plan and the medium- and long-term development plan, and played a positive role in promoting the rapid and balanced development of the astronomical discipline.
