Description

Title: Understanding galaxy formation towards next level with SIMBA simulation.
Speaker:Weiguang Cui (崔伟广)

Abstract:
Understanding galaxies and their formation in the Universe stands at the heart of many astronomy studies, while the relation between the galaxy and its host halo serves as the key connection between observation and theory. We already know the galaxy stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) in the first order with ideas on the reasons driving it. However, is the scatter in the SHMR meaningful? Observations suggested that this connects with galaxy colour bimodality. With the SIMBA simulation (http://simba.roe.ac.uk/) which is currently the only one that is able to reproduce this observation feature, we revealed its physical origins. At cluster mass scale, I will present the 300 galaxy cluster project (https://the300-project.org) with its new updated SIMBA run and discuss how this can be used to improve our understanding of the SHMR, especially for satellite galaxies.

Bio:
Dr. Weiguang Cui graduated from Shanghai Astronomical observatory with his PhD degree. After that, he worked as a postdoc in several places, Italy, Australia, Spain and UK. He currently is an atracción de talento fellow at Universidad de Madrid, Spain. During his research career, he mostly focuses on numerical astronomy studies, especially with hydrodynamic simulations. With this theoretical tool, he tries to understand the formation and evolution of our Universe, which includes, but not limited to, galaxy formation, galaxy clusters, large-scale structure and cosmology.
