Title: Formation channels and EM counterparts of extreme mass ratio inspirals
Speaker: Zhen Pan
Abstract: Extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are one of the major targets of spaceborne gravitational wave (GW) missions. In this talk, I first will introduce the two main EMRI formation channels, dry and wet channels, then the uncertainties in forecasting the EMRI formation rates. Then I will introduce quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs), which are highly likely EM counterparts to EMRIs and discuss what EMRI formation information can we extract from the QPEs.
Bio: Dr. Zhen Pan got his Ph.D of cosmology at University of California, Davis at 2018. He did his postdoc at Perimeter Institute from 2018 to 2023, then joined the faculty of the T.D. Lee Institute and the Department of Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His current research interests are mainly on gravitational wave astrophysics.
