Description

Title: Deep Near-IR Spectroscopy of a Galaxy at Redshift 11

Speaker: Linhua Jiang(江林华)

Abstract:I will present our results from deep near-IR spectroscopic observations of the galaxy GN-z11. GN-z11 was photometrically selected as a galaxy candidate at z > 10, and follow-up HST grism observations suggested that it was roughly at z ~ 11. Its accurate redshift remained unclear. We carried out deep K-band observations using Keck MOSFIRE and detected three emission lines from GN-z11, indicating a redshift of 10.957. This confirms that GN-z11 is the most distant galaxy known to date. During our observations, we also detected a transient with an observed duration shorter than 245 s coincident with GN-z11. This transient can be explained as a rest-frame UV flash associated with a long GRB from GN-z11. I will also discuss the implications of these results.

CV:Linhua Jiang obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Peking University. In 2008 he obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of Arizona. Before he joined Peking University as a faculty member in 2014, he was a Hubble Fellow at Arizona State University. Jiang has a broad research interests in extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology, including high-redshift quasars and supermassive black holes, high-redshift galaxies and clusters, their physical properties and implications to cosmic reionization.
