Abstract: Gas plays an important role in galaxy formation and evolution. With studies of observations towards Lyman alpha blobs at high redshifts, we try to understand how galaxies get gas mass. Cosmological simulations show that gas accretion is important for galaxy formation at high redshift, and we should observe gas infall at this epoch. Such evidence is rare, though. The heating mechanism of Lyman alpha blobs is still unclear and debated. The extended Lyman alpha emission may be linked to the process of galaxy formation at early epochs. We will present our studies towards LABs, and discuss their possible heating mechanisms and evidences of infalling gas around LABs. We will also focus on LABs with less SFRs, where feedbacks are weak, by investigating the line profiles of the ionized gas around them. This will help us to understand galaxy formation and evolution at high redshifts. We will present some preliminary results based on our recent ALMA and VLT data.
Personal CV:
Yiping Ao obtained his B.S. degree from Zhejiang University in 2000. In 2009, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), CAS. He joined millimeter group of MPIfR in 2010, and moved to NAOJ to join the East Asia ALMA regional center in 2013. He came back to PMO in 2018. Yiping has a broad research interests in extragalactic astronomy, including high redshift submm galaxies, Lyman alpha blobs, and cooling flows at local Universe and high redshifts, as well as gas excitation of CMZ clouds.
