Description

Title: Detection of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves and their applications
Speaker:Wen Zhao

Abstract:
The detection of gravitational wave events from the merger of two neutron stars and their multi-band electromagnetic counterparts marks the advent of the era of multi-messenger gravitational wave astronomy. Among them, optical counterparts play a very important role in the study of gravitational wave astronomy. This report introduces the basic properties of the electromagnetic counterparts of the compact binary neutron star merger gravitational wave event, especially the current status and prospects of the search for electromagnetic counterparts using WFST Telescope.

Bio:
Professor of the Department of Astronomy, University of Science and Technology of China. He received his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the Department of Astronomy, University of Science and Technology of China in 2002 and 2006 respectively. He then conducted postdoctoral research at Cardiff University, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, and the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark. He has been awarded the CAS Hundred Talents Program Category A, the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Young Scholars, and the National Outstanding Young Scholars. His research interests are cosmology and gravitational wave astronomy, including cosmic microwave background radiation, early cosmology, detection of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves and their applications, and strong field tests of gravitational waves and gravity. He has published more than 150 papers, which have been cited more than 4,000 times.
